"People, Places, Perspectives" Lecture Series |
In 2006/2007 the Planning Department organized a series of public lectures in an effort to build community awareness and understanding on issues surrounding human settlement and the creation of healthy, vibrant and sustainable communities. Given the benefit accrued through this lecture series, Saanich Planning formed a partnership with the City of Victoria, and the University of Victoria to run an annual regional lecture series, called “People, Places and Perspectives”.

When we are 64...Urban Design and Aging Populations

Around the globe, cites are faced with responding to an aging society.
Planning to meet the needs of our older and less mobile population raises
challenging questions about the design and function of Canada’s urban
and suburban areas. From inaccessible buildings, to a lack of public seating
and limited transportation options, our cities restrict the capacity of our
seniors to live and move comfortably within their communities.

Workshop facilitators enhance your understanding of the dynamics of our
aging population and its impacts on contemporary urban design. Applying
the principles of Universal Design and specialized assessment tools, you
strengthen your capacity to evaluate urban spaces, plan for and create
more accommodating, integrated and accessible environments.

- City Making in Paradise - A Conversation with Mike Harcourt - June 2007
The communities, lifestyles, and surroundings that make southern Vancouver Island such an appealing place to live are under pressure in the face of significant growth and environmental change. On June 19th, the Honourable Mike Harcourt, former Mayor of Vancouver and Premier of British Columbia, held a lively and thought-provoking discussion of the ways in which the daily choices we make as leaders, activists, and citizens influence our capacity to build liveable and resilient communities. As part of his talk, Mike Harcourt also related the lessons learned in three decades of urban planning and development, to the special challenges that confront Victoria and its neighbouring communities, and offers ideas for policy and practice that support sustainable city-making on the west coast.
- What Makes a Place Successful? - February 2007
How can the combination of architecture, land use and design be used to engage people in their communities? Earlier this year a lecture and workshop was held by The Project for Public Spaces (PPS) from New York to examine the process of creating successful public spaces. Fred Kent, President of PPS and Kathy Madden, Director of the PPS Parks program, identified the qualities that make some places memorable and appealing and examined why other places fail as community gather spots.
