Saanich has an exciting opportunity in the Parks Division for a personable, enthusiastic and positive team member.  Working with three Assistant Supervisors and dedicated team of arborists, trades qualified horticulturalists, natural area professionals and seasonal staff, the Supervisor oversees the maintenance of street and park trees; annual, perennial and shrub displays; streetscape and park turf areas; and the maintenance, conservation and restoration of park natural areas.  The Supervisor is responsible for providing coaching, training and guidance to staff; project development, implementation and coordination; budgeting and estimating; work planning; scheduling of routes and projects; coordinating the yearly work plan; and ensuring the safety of staff and the public.  Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, coupled with effective leadership are required.

Qualified candidates must possess at least one (1) of the following:

  • Degree or Diploma in Horticulture or Aborculture from a recognized post-secondary institution;
  • Certificate of Apprenticeship or Trades Qualification Certificate in Horticulture and completion of other courses/training related to the position, supplemented by extensive, comprehensive experience in horticulture, including greenhouse/nursery operations:
  • Degree or Diploma or similar accreditation in environmental studies, environmental sciences, resources management or related discipline from a recognized post-secondary institution.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. In addition, a minimum five years of progressive experience in a related position specific to urban forestry, horticulture or natural areas; experience in project management, planning, budgeting, cost estimating and scheduling; supervisory skills training and a minimum of one year supervisory experience in a related operational work area; possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid BC Pesticide Applicator Certificate; possession of, or ability to obtain, an I.S.A. Certified Tree Risk Assessor Certificate or Tree Risk Assessment Qualification and ISA Certification; possession of a valid Class 5 Driver’s License and a personal vehicle available for use as and when required.
