The District of Saanich is seeking an experienced engineering professional to join our Engineering Department.  The Transportation Division designs roadways, pedestrian and bicycle facilities. The successful candidate will act as a project coordinator/design technician for a variety of capital works projects primarily for transportation infrastructure and occasionally for sewer, water or drainage projects.  Duties include preparing concept plans, designing, and overseeing construction.  Familiarity with road and bikeway design standards and road construction procedures would be an asset.

Requirements for this position include a Diploma in Civil Engineering; a minimum of 5 years related experience; eligibility for membership in ASTT of BC; knowledge of computer based engineering applications including AutoCAD; a valid BC Class 5 driver’s license and the use of a personal vehicle.  Knowledge of municipal approval processes and standards would be an asset. Saanich is seeking an experienced Subdivision Coordinator to join our Planning team. As the Approving Officer for the District of Saanich, the incumbent fulfils a quasi-judicial role required by the Local Government Act and Land Title Act, in reviewing, approving or denying applications for subdivision. 

The successful candidate is responsible for coordinating the subdivision approval process including the review of subdivision drawings for compliance with municipal and provincial regulations, referral review, implementation of consultant’s reports and preparing draft legal documents such as covenants.  The incumbent also prepares reports to Council on matters relating to subdivision approval including rezoning. This position requires considerable tact in dealing with the public, developers and consultants.

Requirements include a four year degree from a college or university with major course work in geography, engineering, or similar field relating to planning; over five years experience in the field of public planning, preferably municipal planning; over five years direct experience in a subdivision application review office working under the supervision of an Approving Officer and a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence.  The successful candidate will possess extensive experience in a municipal subdivision environment or a suitable combination of education and experience.

We are looking for an individual who will be responsible for coordinating the agenda preparation of the weekly Council/Committee of the Whole meetings, and processing all Council correspondence and technical and legal documents, including bylaws and policies.  The incumbent will be responsible for coordinating the Local Area Services and Alternative Approval Process program including preparing legal notices and petitions required within this program.

The ideal candidate thrives in an environment where accuracy is essential, deadlines are met and much of the work follows legal/legislative mandates. Essential requirements include a working knowledge of applicable local government legislation.  Excellent written and verbal skills with a strong knowledge of business English are a must.  You will have a proven track record with problem-solving, building positive relationships and demonstrating political acumen.  A strong customer focus and the ability to be flexible in a changing work environment are equally important.  The incumbent must possess a solid understanding of records management systems and best practices.  Demonstrated experience with research is ideal.  Also required are a certificate in local government administration, public administration or related discipline; a minimum of four years of related administrative experience in a local government environment, and a minimum of two years experience acting as a Council or formal committee secretary at a local government level; proficiency in keyboarding, advanced word processing and shorthand or other form of speedwriting.
