Group Exhibit with Camosun Fine Furniture Program
Intention and Grit – An Exposition of Craft & Furniture Design
June 19 – July 14, 2024

About the Artwork:

The Camosun College Fine Furniture Program is an intensive foundation program that blends traditional and modern woodworking with a strong art and design curriculum.
For most of the program’s history, learners have showcased their craft development with an exhibition mounted at the end of the program.

About the Artists:

Camosun Fine Furniture students conceptualize, design, prototype and build a project in local western maple, or wood obtained through the Vancouver Island Woodworker’s Guild wood recovery program. The Fine Furniture program has run for 36 years at Camosun College, and is well regarded in the wider community. The program is a hybrid of trades training combined with art and design as a major focus. Learners work on creating original works in a 10 month program.

In Gallery Demonstration: June 24, 2024
On June 24, 2024 from 12:00 to 2:30pm, students of the Camosun Fine Furniture & Joinery Program will work in residence at The Arts Centre at Cedar Hill in conjunction with their year-end exhibition at the gallery. Students will be sharing their love and knowledge of hand tools in this interactive event. Traditional woodworking tools used in chairmaking will be demonstrated and explained by students of the program. Visitors are encouraged to take a seat at the shaving horse and try a spokeshave, make shavings with a finely tuned hand plane, or drill round mortices the old-fashioned way with a brace and bit. Everyone is welcome, no previous experience is necessary.

Opening Reception: June 19, 2024 in the Multipurpose Room
