In Saanich, passenger cars, trucks and SUVs account for over 50% of our community’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, or over 280,000 tonnes of GHGs per year. Low carbon transportation options such as electric vehicles (EVs) and active transportation have been steadily increasing and are important climate solutions that are supported through our Climate Plan.

The Capital Region enjoys the highest rate of EV ownership in BC, and the rapid increase in electric vehicles is expected to increase. With new Federal legislation coming into place, 100% of passenger car and truck sales will be zero emissions by 2035. To achieve Saanich’s climate targets, 36% of personal vehicles in Saanich will need to be electric by 2030.
