Description:

Are you passionate about biodiversity, environmental and land use planning, and implementation of environmental management plans? The District of Saanich is recruiting for a Senior Biodiversity Planner to join our expanding Parks team! Saanich, the largest municipality on southern Vancouver Island, is a great place to live, work and play. Reporting to the Manager of Urban Forestry, Natural Areas, and Community Stewardship, this position is responsible for leading complex, cross-departmental initiatives including implementation of Saanich’s Biodiversity Conservation Strategy and assisting with implementation of the Urban Forest Strategy and Climate Plan. The Senior Biodiversity Planner provides in-house technical expertise at a professional level and effective project management, including overseeing the development of bylaws and policies and preparing and delivering reports, presentations, and recommendations related to the conservation, enhancement, and stewardship of biodiversity in the District.

Requirements for the role include: a university degree in environmental planning, ecology, biodiversity, conservation biology or environmental/natural resource management from a recognized university; four years of progressive experience in environmental, biodiversity, natural resource, and/or conservation planning; and eligibility for membership in the province’s College of Applied Biology, Canadian Institute of Planners, Association of Registered      Professional Foresters or other relevant professional body. Candidates will also be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and understanding of GIS as it applies to biodiversity planning and management, and have excellent communication, research, writing, presentation, project management, public engagement, and interpersonal skills. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. 

The successful applicant will work Monday to Friday (40 hours per week) with some evenings and weekends as operationally required, and must have sufficient health, physical conditioning, strength, stamina, and coordination to permit performance of work indoors and outdoors.

As a component of the selection process, testing will be conducted.
