Blue-green algae present at Prospect Lake
Saanich, BC – The District of Saanich advises that water samples taken from Prospect Lake have tested positive for blue-green algae (cyanobacteria).
Visitors and residents are advised to take the following precautions:
- Avoid all contact with blue-green algae blooms. If contact occurs, wash as soon as possible.
- Do not allow your pets to swim or wade in any areas where blue-green algae is visible.
Blue-green algae produces a visible blue-green sheen, which appears as surface scum. If you notice a blue-green algae bloom, please report it to Saanich Parks at 250-475-5522 or parks@saanich.ca.

- Blue-green algae are known toxin producers. The blooms are unpredictable and may occur at any time.
- Ingesting water containing the cyanotoxins may cause a range of symptoms including headaches and abdominal pain in humans. Cyanotoxins can lead to lethal liver damage in dogs.
