Saanich Emergency Program thanks volunteers during National Volunteer Week

Saanich, BC – When disaster strikes, volunteers are an important part of Saanich’s response and recovery efforts. As we approach the final stages of National Volunteer Week celebrations, the Saanich Emergency Program wishes to thank its volunteers for their dedication and continued support of emergency preparedness and response.

Saanich Emergency Program volunteers Larry and Martin.“It takes a special person to volunteer in the community, and an exceptional person to serve for years at a time, as many of our volunteers have,” said Deputy Fire Chief Frank Macdonald. “We further extend our gratitude to the families of our volunteers who support their loved ones who take time away from them to dedicate to our program.”

Volunteers dedicate countless hours training, exercising, planning and sharing their expertise with Saanich residents. Saanich is grateful for the time they dedicate to the program, making the community stronger and more resilient.

Quick Facts
  • 100 volunteers bring valuable experience to the Saanich Emergency Program.
  • If a Saanich resident is evacuated from their home and requires support, volunteers respond to support and assist. Volunteers are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year.
  • Over the years, many volunteers have pursued fulfilling careers in emergency management, while others have joined the program in the midst of, or following, rewarding careers in other sectors.
  • In 2016, volunteers delivered preparedness presentations to over 1000 individuals and supported the delivery of the Grade 4 Emergency Preparedness Program to 1000 students. They also attended countless public events to promote preparedness.
  • The Saanich Emergency Program’s mandate is to provide for continuity in government and the preservation of life and property through a co-ordinated response by elected officials, municipal departments, volunteer services, and outside agencies. The program is currently recruiting for positions in the Emergency Radio Communications and Emergency Social Services components.
