Saanich one step closer to Shelbourne Street improvements

Saanich, BC – After extensive public engagement and planning, Saanich is one step closer to starting construction on the Shelbourne Street improvements. A tender has been issued today seeking qualified contractors to complete the multi-phase project.

“After years of working with citizens to find solutions to some of Shelbourne’s most immediate mobility and transportation challenges, we are thrilled to announce that we are one step closer to construction, which is anticipated to start mid-2020,” said Mayor Fred Haynes. “The project includes significant upgrades to transportation infrastructure and underground utilities, and will provide safer routes for all users.”

Improvements to watch for

The Shelbourne Street Improvement Project will improve infrastructure along Shelbourne Street, from North Dairy Road to Torquay Drive.

The upgrades are designed to deliver many positive outcomes including:

• New, continuous cycling facilities, including the UVic cycle connector
• New or improved sidewalks
• Improved transit infrastructure
• New or upgraded sewer, storm and water infrastructure
• Repaved roadway
• Improved landscaping

Phases and timing

To minimize disruption, construction will be divided into three phases over several years.

• Phase 1 (north segment, McKenzie Avenue to Torquay Drive): Construction is estimated to start in early-mid 2020, with a duration of approximately one year.
• Phase 2 (south segment, North Dairy Road to Pear Street and the UVic cycle connector): Construction is estimated to start in 2021.
• Phase 3 (middle segment, Pear Street to McKenzie Avenue): Construction is estimated to start in 2022.
