Saanich’s draft climate plan ready for additional feedback

Saanich, BC – Did you know that the District of Saanich is creating a plan to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 and to net zero by 2050? Did you also know the same plan will help us prepare for climate change and become a 100% renewable energy community by 2050?

The District of Saanich is in the third and final stage of public engagement on the climate plan: 100% Renewable and Resilient Saanich. The public is now invited to read the updated draft plan and provide feedback through a short survey.

“Saanich is committed to our climate goals, but we can’t do it alone,” said Mayor Fred Haynes. “Throughout our engagement we learned that there is broad support for urgent and effective climate action. We’re looking for additional feedback on the plan as it takes its final shape before approval and implementation.”

Additional feedback on the final draft will be incorporated into the final plan which will be presented to Council in late fall for consideration. Implementation of the final plan is expected to occur in early 2020.

Read the plan and take the survey

The draft plan is ready to review and the survey will be open until October 9. Visit Saanich.ca/climateplan.

Plan highlights

Transportation is the largest source of GHGs in the community. Climate friendly transportation is active (e.g. walking or cycling) or uses renewable energy (e.g. electric public transit or personal vehicles). To support the community in sustainable mobility, the draft plan proposes to:

  • Invest in walking, cycling, and public transit amenities.
  • Support increased affordable electric public transit service and transit-oriented development.
  • Expand access to electric vehicle charging, including for condo owners and renters in apartments.
