Braefoot Park building management transitions to Saanich

Saanich, BC – After many years of leasing the building to the Braefoot Community Association (BCA), the District of Saanich has made the decision to assume the management and occupancy of the building at Braefoot Park in early 2021. 

In order to meet Council and community priorities, Saanich has a critical and immediate need to manage and use the Braefoot Park building. Additional Saanich-operated facility space is required to support changing demands and provide enhanced services for the community’s highly diverse population including older adults, children and youth, Indigenous, LGBTQ2+, newcomers, immigrants, refugees, low income families and cultural arts.

Saanich will work with longstanding amateur sports clubs, such as soccer and lacrosse, to support the provision of amateur sports programs in Braefoot Park.

Given the long-standing history between Saanich and the BCA, Saanich will support the BCA’s ongoing operations through its transition to an alternate location by offering a month-to-month lease.  Consideration will be given to any programs or activities being offered not only by the BCA, but also by sub-tenants to ensure a smooth transition for all parties, participants and clients. 

Saanich owns the building and maintains park infrastructure as part of its regular operations. Under the current lease arrangement Saanich is responsible for the building and any major systems upgrades. Following the transition, all appropriate activities and services in the park will be provided directly by Parks, Recreation and Community Services through existing amateur sport user groups or through park permitting and licenses.
