Moving ahead with the permanent barrier installation along Prospect Lake Road

Saanich, BC – After an extensive monitoring period of the pilot single lane modification on Prospect Lake Road at Calvert Park, the District will be going forward with the permanent installation of the concrete roadside barrier and single lane yield design which has demonstrated improved safety for roadway users and pedestrians.

“We know from talking to residents in the area that safety on their roads is a top priority, and as such have focused considerable review on the area to determine what can best be done to meet the needs of all, said Mayor Fred Haynes. “The traffic calming results have been well received and we are proceeding with the permanent installation.”

Pilot project

A 70-meter stretch of road fronting Calvert Park was re-laned to a single travel lane with advance yield—the result being similar to a one-lane bridge. The goal of the pilot project was to test whether it was feasible to install a roadside barrier without significantly widening the road. Safety improvements at this location were recommended in the recently completed Prospect Lake Road Safety Audit to reduce the risk of off-road accidents.

Moving forward

Throughout the course of the trial, drivers adapted to the change in road conditions and road speeds were reduced while maintaining adequate traffic flow. The changes from the current state of the area will be minimal and include:

• Removal of the temporary road markings
• Installation of overhead street lighting
• Installation of permanent reflectorized traffic lane markings
• Installation of the concrete no-post barrier with reflector strips and hazard signs along the east edge of the roadway throughout the single lane section
• Re-painting of the white fog lines

Details of the permanent installation can be found at saanich.ca/projects. We will continue to monitor the project following the completion of the permanent installation, making additional changes if necessary.

Construction Impacts

Construction is anticipated to start in October. In order to install the traffic barrier, Prospect Lake Road will be closed at Calvert Park in both directions on Monday, November 2 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. For the remainder of the construction period, crew and equipment will be on site between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

How will this project impact traffic?

A traffic barrier is being installed to improve safety for roadway users and pedestrians. Creating a single lane not only makes the road safer, but it also strikes a balances between environmental concerns, tree preservation, traffic calming and cost effectiveness.
