Planned power outage at Saanich Commonwealth Place
May 19, 2021
Saanich, BC – Saanich Commonwealth Place (SCP) will undergo a planned power outage starting Thursday, May 20 at 6 p.m. to replace a temporary generator with a new temporary transformer to power the facility.
Patrons will be notified about any indoor program cancellations due to the outage. Outdoor programs are unaffected. It’s expected SCP will reopen with regular indoor programming Friday, May 21.
Late last week, the recreation centre experienced an unplanned power outage due to a total transformer failure resulting in a facility closure for two days. An emergency mobile generator was installed to keep vital air handling, electrical, and pool filtration systems running, which allowed the recreation centre to remain open and to continue running indoor programs and services. With the installation of the temporary transformer, the generator will be removed and any noise disruption from the generator will stop.
“We want to thank our patrons and neighbours for their patience and understanding,” said SCP Manager Jennifer Jakobsen. “We appreciate the support from the community as we continue our programming through this challenge.”
The temporary transformer is expected to be replaced with a permanent transformer. At that time there will be another planned outage for installation. More information will be shared when the timing is confirmed.
