Artist call out! Community Canvas Mural Project kicks off with a call for artists

Saanich, BC – The District of Saanich is launching a mural program to add public art to three Saanich parks this summer. Local artists or artist teams are invited to submit mural proposals to kick off the 2022 Community Canvas Mural Project.

The pilot project is launching to help inform the development of a future community mural program. The project aims to enhance Saanich neighbourhoods and public spaces by integrating public art. Artists are commissioned to create publicly accessible, engaging art that inspires a sense of pride, identity and belonging and celebrates community, culture and diversity.

Artists or artist teams from the Capital Regional District and Southern Vancouver Island are invited to submit proposals for three designated mural locations. The locations are Beckwith Park, Layritz Park, and Cedar Hill Park adjacent to the Cedar Hill Recreation and Arts Centre.

Proposals will be reviewed through a two-stage selection process. Saanich will also be seeking Selection Committee members to participate in evaluating submissions and recommendations of artists.

Saanich recognizes and values diversity and inclusion and encourages applications for both calls from individuals and groups typically underrepresented, including BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Colour), 2SLGBTQIA+ identifying individuals, and persons with disabilities.

“Public murals provide amazing opportunities to add vibrancy and placemaking to our community spaces and places,” said Nadine Kawata, Community Planner responsible for Public Art in Saanich. "Our region is home to many talented and experienced mural artists who, through their work, foster community connectedness and pride.”

“As the largest municipality in the region, there is a wide range of future mural opportunities where artists and community can come together to create accessible art within our community,” adds Saanich Community Arts Programmer, Brenda Weatherston.
