Saanich, BC – With grocery costs on the rise, Saanich is encouraging residents to reduce food waste and share food-saving tips and tricks from November 4 to 18 to win one of five $100 grocery store gift cards.
“Choosing low-carbon foods and reducing food waste is one of the strategies outlined in our Climate Plan to help move us towards the goal of cutting our community GHG emissions in half by 2030,” said Mayor-Elect Dean Murdock. “We can all play a role in tackling climate change, and this is one simple shift that each of us can make that has a positive impact on both the planet and the pocketbook.”
While greenhouse gas emissions from food production and consumption represent a smaller percentage of overall emissions compared to transportation and buildings in Saanich, they are still significant. The most considerable greenhouse gas emissions from food in Saanich come from fish, meat, eggs, and dairy products. Reducing food waste, especially from these foods, can reduce our climate impact while saving you money.
