Update on garbage and organics collection – keep your bins out!

December 21, 2022

News update

Saanich, BC – Fortunately, Saanich did not see as much snowfall last night which allowed crews to make more progress on the primary, secondary, and today’s refuse collection routes. We are attempting to collect garbage and organics that were missed yesterday due to extreme weather.

If crews are not able to collect garbage and organics due to weather conditions, residents are asked to please leave carts out, ensuring to not impede snow removal. Collection will continue as conditions improve.

The changing weather conditions and compacted snow/ice will continue to challenge response efforts. Support services are recording missed collections as they are reported.

Please be aware that some organic carts aren’t fully emptying due to freezing temperatures so there may be frozen residue inside your cart, based on how well the material was bagged.

Up-to-date information is available at saanich.ca/greenergarbage.

General snow and ice removal

Saanich crews are clearing as quickly as possible on a prioritized schedule:

  • Emergency access routes (in communication with Police, Fire and Ambulance)
  • Major roads (high volume roads and connectors to our transportation system)
  • Priority bus routes
  • Pre-identified steep residential hills
  • Priority sidewalks on bridges and pedestrian overpasses/underpasses

Crews are working around the clock to diligently clear our major routes and are now working on widening where possible, maintaining and expanding to secondary routes and steep hill locations. We thank the public for their patience and understanding as we continue to work to create safe routes for travel.

Don’t forget that property owners are responsible for clearing snow from all sidewalks adjacent to their properties and are encouraged to assist neighbours when possible.
