For immediate release
Saanich, BC – Saanich’s new Animals Bylaw is now in place after passing fourth and final reading last night. This kicks off an education and transition period that will give Saanich staff and CRD enforcement officers time to inform park visitors about the coming changes.
During this transition period, people will begin to see updated signage in Saanich parks, and periodic updates posted to the Saanich website and on our social media channels. Staff are also working on a People, Pets and Parks Implementation Plan and related budget, consistent with the new bylaw and direction received from Council.
It is expected that work on pet-related facilities will be undertaken as funding, staff resources and construction scheduling allow.
We would like to thank everyone who shared their feedback throughout this important process. Ultimately, Saanich parks are for everyone. Pets are a welcome part of the community, and both people and pets benefit from outdoor recreation and use of public parks. We are confident the new bylaw — which includes revisions that were made following public feedback — will achieve a balanced approach for sharing Saanich parks.
