Tenant Assistance Policy comes into effect today

Saanich, BC – Saanich’s new Tenant Assistance Policy, an initiative requiring that landowners provide support to tenants being evicted as a result of redevelopment or major renovations, comes into effect today.

The policy applies to rezoning applications where five or more rental units will need to be permanently vacated. This includes all types of residential rental units (apartments, rented strata units, secondary suites, rented single family homes, etc). Applicants are now required to submit a Tenant Assistance Plan as part of their rezoning application addressing tenant supports such as relocation assistance, Right of First Refusal, and financial compensation.

Most purpose-built rental buildings in Saanich were built before the 1990s and, as buildings age, they become more likely to be considered for redevelopment or major renovations. The new policy adds protection to current renters in Saanich, as we work to encourage revitalization of existing buildings and new rental housing development.

Rezoning applications received before June 12 are not subject to this new policy.

Council unanimously approved the policy at a meeting on May 1. More information for rezoning applicants and renters is available at saanich.ca/tap.
