The Victoria Native Friendship Centre (VNFC) shows Art of Reconciliation Collection and shines a spotlight on a unique program for young Indigenous and non-Indigenous people exploring their feelings about reconciliation.

lək̓ʷəŋən Territiory/SAANICH - On March 10, 2023, the Art of Reconciliation Collection will be presented at the Cedar Hill Recreation and Art Centre. The exhibition hosts pieces from participants of the Victoria Native Friendship Centre’s Art of Reconciliation Program, including a first showing of the latest group to complete the program. A community mosaic art piece will also be unveiled, designed by Esquimalt Nation artist Darlene Gait and based on the concept of Unity.

“We are excited to unveil and experience these exhibits” said Ron Rice - Wush’q, VNFC Executive Director. “Art creates opportunities for us to establish an emotional response to a cause or concept, and the vision and partnerships that created this unique program are part of a new journey towards reconciliation in our community. We celebrate the partners, the learners, the community contribution, and the works of art that can help show us a way forward”.  

The Art of Reconciliation is a two-month program that brings together Indigenous and non-Indigenous young people aged 19-29 years.  A safe space is created where they can explore their feelings about reconciliation and express their findings through supported art therapy, learning from one another, forming new friendships, and taking action together.  The program is delivered in collaboration between VNFC, Art Therapist Debbie Douez, and the University of Victoria’s Centre for Youth and Society. Saanich Community Services is the community partner for the latest group, hosted at the Cedar Hill Recreation and Arts Centre.
