For immediate release

Saanich, BC – The District of Saanich is inviting applications from professional artists and artist teams interested in developing outdoor public artwork as part of the Fire Station No. 2 Redevelopment Project.

The project is part of the District’s Civic Public Art Program and aims to enhance Saanich public spaces and contribute to community placemaking through the integration of public art. An artist or artist team will be commissioned to create site-specific artwork that will serve as an engaging landmark element for the fire station and the Royal Oak neighbourhood.

Artists or artist teams from British Columbia are invited to submit applications. First Nations and Indigenous artists, as well as artists who identify with equity-deserving groups are encouraged to apply.

The artwork will be selected through a two-stage public jury process under the policy and guidelines of the District’s Comprehensive Arts Policy. A project jury has been established following a public call-out for jury members this spring. Jury members will evaluate applications and develop a shortlist of applicants to proceed to develop proposals in stage two of the process.

The new artwork, slated for unveiling alongside the opening of the new fire station in 2026, will highlight this redeveloped public space that includes a small public plaza and new transit interchange.

Application deadline

Artist applications are being accepted online until Wednesday, August 28, at 4:00 p.m.
