Emergency Service Dispatchers and 9-1-1 Awareness Week

Saanich, BC – In recognition of Emergency Service Dispatchers and 9-1-1 Awareness Week, April 14-20, Saanich Fire Department acknowledges the dedicated service and professionalism of our dispatchers. Saanich Municipal Hall will light up red and blue during the week, as will other notable buildings such as the Canada Place Sails of Light and Legislative Assembly of British Columbia on April 16.

“At Saanich Fire, this important week has two objectives. The first is to recognize and thank our dispatchers, who are a critical lifeline to both the public and first responders. In addition, it is a great opportunity to share tips for our residents should they need to call 9-1-1” said Fire Chief Michael Kaye.

Saanich Fire Dispatch supports 18 regional departments, providing service to over 200,000 residents in the region. “Our team of dispatchers is second to none in the industry. If you have a need to call for help, be assured highly-trained and capable staff will be answering your call,” says Kaye.

Saanich Fire Dispatch is offering the following 9-1-1 tips:

  • Stay on the line: When a dispatcher keeps you on the line to gather more information, help is likely on the way before your call ends.
  • Parents, teach your kids: Practice identifying landmarks during routine activities like going to the park, recreation centre, grocery store or school.
  • Make Yourself a Good Caller: Stay on the line and do not hang up until the Dispatcher tells you it is okay to do so. They may need to ask additional questions regarding the emergency.
