Saanich, BC – The District of Saanich is introducing highly visible safety devices on refuse trucks to keep road users safe.
We are outfitting all refuse trucks with two Airbars; these inflatable safety devices are designed to extend from the vehicle to draw commuter attention with hi-vis membranes and bright flashing LED lights.
Our Solid Waste Services crews engage this feature when a refuse truck tipper arm is in the extended position collecting organics and garbage carts across bike lanes and other areas
Saanich is currently the only local municipality implementing Airbar devices for increased road user safety.
Why is this important?
Protected bike lanes present a challenge to our Solid Waste Services crews. During the fall and winter seasons, collections start at 7 a.m., when conditions are darker and offer much less visibility for both road users and our crews.
When you see Airbars engaged on refuse trucks, please anticipate a slow-moving work zone ahead and slow your speed.
