The District of Saanich’s Wade Thoreson (centre) receives his award from BCMSA CEO Mike Roberts (L) and BCMSA President Rebecca Chow (R).
Saanich, BC – The District of Saanich proudly congratulates one of its Parks, Recreation and Community Services employees whose exemplary work has earned him the BC Municipal Safety Association’s 2024 Junior Health & Safety Leader Award.
Wade Thoreson, the Aquatics Programmer II at Gordon Head Recreation Centre, oversees the health and safety of more than 100 permanent and casual aquatic staff members as well as the facility’s numerous patrons. In this capacity, he has played a crucial role in educating and empowering others with the skills and confidence to perform their duties, including proactively addressing health and safety concerns and responding effectively to health and safety incidents.
“In addition to his multiple safety, first aid and training certifications, what truly sets Wade apart is his resourcefulness and his proactive approach to health and safety, identifying potential hazards and implementing preventive measures,” says Suzanne Samborski, Director of Parks, Recreation and Community Services. “In addition to his regular duties, Wade also took the initiative to reintroduce the Vancouver Island Regional Lifeguard Championships this summer — after a six-year lapse — championing the event, leading the planning, and reigniting interest in technical lifeguard events in the province. His contributions are many, and he is very deserving of this special honour.”
This annual award by the BCMSA recognizes a junior up-and-coming safety individual in local government who is involved and passionate about health and safety, and who has developed a health and safety initiative or solution to assist in achieving compliance or a need in the field of occupational safety and health for their organization.
