Saanich, BC –The District of Saanich and Saanich Fire Department invite residents to participate in Fire Prevention Week, running from October 6 to 12, 2024.

Smoke alarms are the theme of this year’s campaign, which aims to highlight how properly installed and maintained smoke alarms provide the life-saving early warning needed during a fire.

“Fire Prevention Week is a great time to assess and improve the fire safety measures in your home," says Saanich Fire Department Chief Michael Kaye. "We urge everyone to take simple steps such as installing and maintaining smoke alarms and being vigilant about eliminating common fire hazards in their homes. By working together, we can significantly reduce the risk of fires and ensure the safety of our families and community."

Smoke alarm installation and testing tips

  • Install smoke alarms inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of your home. For larger homes, ensure there are alarms in all main areas.
  • Test smoke alarms every month by pressing the test button to be sure your alarms are in good working condition.
  • Place smoke alarms on ceilings or high on walls. Keep them at least 10 feet from the stove to reduce false alarms.
  • Set a calendar reminder to replace batteries at least once per year, or when the low battery power alarm chirps. Use Daylight Saving Time changes as a reminder to change batteries.
  • Replace smoke alarms every 10 years, even if they seem to be working well. Check the manufacturer date on the back of the alarm.
  • Develop a home fire escape plan that includes two ways out of every room. Try to remember to practice the plan at least twice a year, both during the day and at night.

Your participation in Fire Prevention Week is crucial to making Saanich a safer community.

Stay informed, stay prepared, and most importantly, stay safe.
