Saanich, BC – The District of Saanich invites residents to a public drop-in information event on Saturday, October 26, to learn more about the proposed plan for redeveloping the Saanich Operations Centre at 1040 McKenzie Avenue.

“We are excited to showcase the draft site plan to the public,” says Director of Engineering Harley Machielse. “Redeveloping the Operations Centre will allow us to continue delivering high-quality essential services to residents long into the future while also increasing the supply of affordable and market rental housing in our community.”

Event details

When: Saturday, October 26, 2024 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Where: Bucket Shed at the Saanich Operations Centre (1040 McKenzie Avenue)

This public information event will detail the project’s scope and outline next steps. Community members will have the opportunity to engage with project experts, provide feedback and understand how this project aligns with Saanich’s Official Community Plan and Housing Strategy.

The project aims to modernize the Operations Centre while addressing Saanich's critical housing needs as identified in the District's Housing Strategy.

Project Highlights:

  • The rezoning application will be submitted in November 2024. Subsequently, Council will consider the necessary Zoning Bylaw amendments in Q1 2025. Based on the new provincial legislation, the process will not require a public hearing as the plan aligns with current OCP allowances for use, height and density.
  • The redevelopment will leverage Saanich-owned land to boost the supply of affordable and market rental housing. Planned residential buildings will encompass 400 to 600 units, offering a variety of studio, one, two, and three-bedroom options. Affordable rentals will be integral to these plans, supporting Saanich's commitment to new purpose-built rental housing.
  • The total redevelopment costs are estimated at $172 million (+/−25%), with $30M residual land value from private sector development reducing the District’s total cost.
