Saanich, BC – The District of Saanich is encouraging residents to assess their family’s emergency preparedness plan and understand the tsunami risks in Saanich during Tsunami Preparedness Week.
Organized by the Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness’, Tsunami Preparedness Week is a great time for families to devote time to creating an emergency preparedness kit and discussing evacuation plans.
“Tsunami Preparedness Week is all about helping Saanich residents understand the tsunami risk within our community,” said Saanich Emergency Program Officer Erin Stockill. “People are often surprised to learn that much of Saanich is safe from tsunami, located outside the tsunami hazard zone. For those few localities that are within the hazard zone, in most cases, moving to safety means crossing the street or leaving the beach. For example, if you are visiting Cordova Bay beach, you only need to walk a few blocks inland from the beach. If you live within the tsunami hazard zone, try practicing your evacuation routes on foot or by bike, with your family or friends.”
