Saanich, BC – Numerous District of Saanich projects were completed in 2024 thanks in part to $3.8 million in funding from the Government of Canada’s Canada Community-Building Fund (CCBF).
“The Canada Community-Building Fund creates more inclusive, connected communities by investing in essential infrastructure that improves daily life,” said Taleeb Noormohamed, Member of Parliament for Vancouver Granville, on behalf of the Honourable Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities. “Last year, we proudly supported projects in the District of Saanich that enhance accessibility, promote active lifestyles, and build healthier, more vibrant communities.”
Projects supported by this funding included sidewalk installation throughout the District and major improvements to Shelbourne Street between North Dairy Road and Pear Street, as part of the Shelbourne Street Improvements Project.
“Saanich residents are benefiting from safer, more accessible streets and better transportation options thanks to improved infrastructure,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs. “Strong infrastructure is key to building complete, livable communities as we work hard to increase housing options. We’ll continue partnering with federal and local governments to invest in projects that strengthen communities and improve the lives of British Columbians.”
A significant portion of this funding, $3.5 million, was put towards upgrades along Shelbourne Street. Improvements included:
- Upgraded UVic bike connector along Pear Street and Poplar Avenue from Shelbourne Street up to Richmond Road and across Cedar Hill Cross Road.
- New sidewalks along Shelbourne Street.
- New bike paths on both sides of Shelbourne Street.
- New multi-use-path on Derby Road, west of Shelbourne Street.
- New sidewalk on McRae Avenue, west of Shelbourne Street.
- Upgraded bus stops along the entire corridor.
- New traffic signals at six intersections.
- Upgraded street lighting and improvements to critical underground utilities such as sewers, watermains and more.
An additional $2.5 million, part from 2024 CCBF funding and part from CCBF reserve funds, has allowed the District to install sidewalks in several locations in Saanich, making our community safer and more accessible for residents.
“Through the Canada Community-Building Fund, we’re able to enhance important infrastructure across Saanich, making it easier, safer and more convenient for people to get around,” said Mayor Dean Murdock. “We are incredibly grateful for the support from the Government of Canada and UBCM, helping us enhance the quality of life within our neighbourhoods and create lasting positive impacts for all who call Saanich home.”
