With three felt earthquakes in Saanich in less than a month, emergency preparedness is front of mind for residents and the Saanich Emergency Program (SEP) is keen to help!
Operating as a division of the Saanich Fire Department, the SEP delivers free emergency preparedness presentations in our community, both in person at Saanich recreation centres and virtually.
This month’s Preparedness 101: Emergency Preparedness Begins with You presentation filled to capacity within hours of Monday morning’s earthquake, but the opportunity to prepare isn’t lost! The SEP will deliver the same presentation virtually by Microsoft Teams next month.

“People are taking this shake seriously. We hope Saanich residents will use this opportunity as a reminder to enhance preparedness in the home and workplace,” said Erin Stockill, Emergency Program Officer. “Start simple, start now.”
Stockill encourages taking practical steps today to feel empowered:
- Drop, Cover and Hold On: if it feels like an earthquake, take action to protect yourself.
- Make a kit and a plan! Use our online resources, checklists and videos to get started! Remember to consider your pets and look out for neighbours and older adults in your community as you prepare.
- Do a home hazard hunt: take steps to identify problematic areas and secure your space.
- Enhance your emergency education: sign up for a free SEP presentation.
