Upcoming weight room closure at Gordon Head Recreation Centre
April 28, 2025
Information Bulletin
For immediate release
Saanich, BC – The District of Saanich is providing early notice to the public about a required closure of the weight room at Gordon Head Recreation Centre (GHRC), which will begin May 12 and last approximately 4 months.
A persistent moisture problem between the ceiling and the roof over the weight room requires significant repair that will include demolition, remediation and reconstruction. As there are no current safety concerns, the weight room will remain open until the closure date.
The closure will affect the weight room only. Programs that utilize the auditorium, dance studio, multipurpose room, and fitness annex facilities are not affected.
Saanich Recreation recognizes the significant impact that the closure of this popular facility will have on GHRC patrons and staff, and is working to minimize the impacts as best as possible.
During the closure
Saanich has three other recreation centres (Saanich Commonwealth Place, Cedar Hill Recreation Centre and G.R. Pearkes Recreation Centre) that remain available for all residents. Access Pass holders and drop-in users are encouraged to visit our other centres, which all have well-equipped weight rooms and many other activities for people of all ages.
As more visitors are welcomed at our three other weight rooms in Saanich, these facilities may be busier than normal and all patrons are asked to be patient and respectful with each other during this temporary situation.
While a disruption to your usual fitness routine can be frustrating, it can also be an opportunity to try something new. Check out Saanich’s Activity Guides to see all that Saanich recreation centres have to offer.
The District would like to thank its valued patrons for their patience and continued support — and we look forward to welcoming you back to the GHRC weight room with a new and improved roof soon!
