Project Background

G.R. Pearkes Recreation Centre is embarking on a Mechanical Upgrade Project.  The project will decarbonize the facility operations by installing new heat pumps and electric dehumidifiers and adding a heat recovery ventilation system and electric heating to the fieldhouse. The project will increase the energy efficiency of the building by upgrading major HVAC components and reduce GHG emissions by electrifying the heating and dehumidification for the majority of the facility.

Funding for the Mechanical Upgrade Project has been secured through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program - CleanBC Communities Fund. Additional funding is being provided by the District of Saanich. 

Work on the project will begin in November and is anticipated to continue into 2025. The centre anticipates the ability to remain open during all phases of the project; however, interruptions to building heating are expected. Impacts to facility spaces and programs will be localized and every attempt will be made to minimize patron impact.

Project Scope and Timelines

G.R. Pearkes’s Mechanical Upgrade Project will be split into two phases.

Phase 1

The first phase will involve mechanical improvements for the building and ice rinks. Phase 1 is anticipated to span from fall 2024 to winter 2025. Improvements will include new electric dehumidification in the ice rinks, replacement heat pump rooftop units and electrical upgrades.

Phase 2

The second phase will involve mechanical improvements for the Field House. Phase 2 is anticipated to begin in spring 2025. Improvements will include a new packaged heat pump unit with heat recovery to provide outdoor air ventilation, heating, and cooling.
