We build about five kilometres of sidewalk each year. With our many major and collector roads, however, we would need to build 200 kilometres of good sidewalk to cover them all.
It is simply not possible to build all of the desired pedestrian infrastructure right now. Therefore, we take great care choosing which projects we do fund each year.
How are sidewalk projects chosen?
We consider many factors. Are they close to important places?
- Schools and seniors’ facilities
- Villages and centres
- Parks and community facilities
- Transit
We also consider:
- Population density
- Traffic volumes
- Collisions
- Network links
- Ability to coordinate with other projects
Active Transportation Plan
In June 2018 Council Adopted an Active Transportation Plan. The Engineering department and Council follow this plan when choosing new sidewalk locations
