Description:

Saanich Public Works is seeking a Utility Locator to perform work requiring skill and ability in the locating and marking of a variety of underground utilities to prevent damage during ground disturbance activities for maintenance, repair and capital projects.  This position is a subject matter expert in utility locating and the Ground Disturbance SWP, providing sections with: expert advice, training, orientation and education related to the underground locating and the application of the Ground Disturbance Safe Work Practice.  

Other duties will involve: reading and interpreting plans, as-builts/record drawings, survey information, reports and environmental cues; operating a variety of locating equipment including electromagnetic locating equipment, ground penetrating radar and metal detectors and liaising with both internal and external agencies on job sites to ensure buried utilities are accurately marked and provide ground disturbance related information.

Requirements include: Grade 12 or equivalent and additional courses in plan reading and underground utility locating; BCMSA Utility Locator Specialist certificate; NULCA (National Utility Locating Contractors Association) certification or approved equivalent; 3 years of experience working in a public works construction environment, including one year of experience reading and interpreting engineering drawings and locating buried infrastructure; valid traffic control certificate as required, and a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence. Registration as Utility Locator Technician with ASTTBC or other approved designation is an asset.

Sufficient health, physical conditioning, strength, stamina and coordination to permit performance of work including lifting utility lids which can range between 13 lbs and 100 lbs. Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. 

The successful candidate will be required to work on a casual basis (as required) from Monday to Friday between the hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m or 8:00 a.m. -4:30 p.m.
