Saanich, BC – The redesigned staircase at the west approach to PKOLS (Mount Douglas Park) beach is now open to the public.

“We’re excited to reopen this access point to the one of the most beautiful beaches in Saanich,” said Manager of Parks Planning and Development Paul de Greeff. “In addition to maintaining public safety, these new stairs will help minimize impacts on the surrounding environment.”

Construction on the new stairs down the west approach to the beach started in October 2022.

The stairs were closed to the public in late summer 2022 because of public safety concerns due to cracking concrete and lower sections falling into the ocean. The new stairs are designed with wood rather than concrete, as wood is more flexible and are a lower impact material.

The new staircase was designed and constructed with Green Shores principles, such as integrating with beach processes, revegetation and erosion control.

Please use caution when accessing the beach as it remains a rough, natural landscape with obstacles and hazards typical of this landscape type.
